Suppose we have a …
Suppose we have a straight-line demand curve that hits the horizontal axis at Q, then its marginal revenue curve is also a straight line and it hits the horizontal axis at Q/2. To prove this, suppose the demand curve is p = a-bQ. Then total revenue is TR = p*Q = (a-bQ)*Q = aQ - bQ^2. The marginal revenue curve is by definition dTR/dQ = a - 2bQ. So, to find the intercepts, set price = 0. Therefore, for the original demand (p=a-bQ) ==> p=0, Q=ab. For marginal revenue, p=0 at Q = 1/2*a/b.
